Haitian Earthquake

My heart goes out to all of the people suffering from the tragedy in Haiti.  I am praying they will be encouraged and supported through their sufferings.  We have a sister church that has just started up in Carrefour and I wanted to post an update that I received today from a fellow missionary, Duncan Heaster, who has recently been to Haiti and worked with these people.  I included a photo so that you can visualize who you are praying for when you pray for them.

HAITI
Readers will be aware that we were able to start our first church here about 2 months ago, and that since then the group have grown mightily. And now the very area where they lived, in Carrefour just outside Port au Prince, has been one of the worst hit areas in the huge earthquake that's occured. Current estimates speak of 100,000  dead and the area devastated- where 80% already were living below the poverty line. Readers have likely seen enough gruesome photos of the situation on the media, but there's a local Haitian website which has presently the most comprehensive collection at
http://www.metropolehaiti.com/photo/img.php?id_img=608 . This must rank amongst one of the worst disasters of recent times. We had been enjoying some email chatting with Brother Esmath [presumably he was in an internet cafe where he usually emails from] until the last message was received at 20:48 GMT on 12 January. It was a Word document summary of his teaching the previous Sunday. We made a response to the effect "Good job!" and heard no more. This was in fact less than an hour before the earthquake struck. Our brother had written just before that a mail as follows:
"If you were here physically close to me , you would see how happy  and overjoyed I am while  writing you these lines. My joy is overflowed every time I have opportunity to communicate with you Brothers. Now the light of the real Gospel is being shone and there is no more confusion. Let me present to you my deeply congratulations because yesterday I received a parcel contained some french documents that are very interesting , and can be very helpful to me in my teaching.  Keep on praying God for that ministry because my dreams is to preach the real gospel by opening the eyes of some many people all over Haiti, not only around Carrefour. Amazing thins Happend last sunday! Last Sunday we had two services, the ordinary service started  from 6:00 to 9:00 Am .  I attempted  a second service that was a success ans was packed also. what was it ? the second service was an English started from 9:00 to 11:00 , that is to say  the worshipping was in English ,I invited more than  60 people who speak English, specially my former students, It was a success because there were more people than  the first service. many people remained standing but it was a blessing  because the presence of God was there. Bonne journée mes frères!"

In the midst of our plans, we have to say "God willing...". Our brother worked for the United Nations and as such they informed his relatives in USA that he is in fact alive but his home has collapsed and like many others he is sleeping in the street. This is all the news we have, all phones are down. We don't know what has become of the other brethren. Clearly there is immense suffering all over and to even begin to think of where to begin coping with it is a daunting task. We have sent our brother US$ 2000 and this will be used for welfare work. What's really needed is for someone to go out there and try to get a handle on what can really be done as well as to account for the rest of our brethren and their families.

Our prayers are of course with the whole situation, and to focus your prayers here's a picture sent by br Esmath last week of the Sunday meetings at his place [he is at the back in blue shirt and red tie]- which is now flattened by the earthquake to the point he's sleeping in the street outside:

Our church's Meal A Day Program is currently assisting in Haiti with Partners in Health (PIH) to support basic medical care for prisoners in Haiti. Now the need is desperate to provide basic medical attention to perhaps thousands injured in this earthquake.

They are in contact with both PIH and with a church family in Haiti  to see how they can best help. PIH is asking for financial donations for emergency medical supplies for their hospitals and other medical care facilities already in place in Haiti.

If you wish to help with this urgent need, please click the link below to go to the Meal a Day contribution page and use PayPal to make a secure donation. Or else, you can mail a donation designating it for "Haiti". Details are on the linked page.

May all of the Haitians know that the world is mourning with them and that we will be there to help in their time of need!

Open the eyes of my heart

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves torment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.  I John 4:18

Since moving to South Africa, I have seen God begin to work within me to conquer my many deep seated fears.  It began back in the U.S. with overcoming fear and learning to trust my husband to lead our family.  It continued on with facing my fear of vaccinating my children so we could come to this country full of those diseases that we so thankfully eradicated in the U.S.   I learned to look only to God for His approval, instead of seeking it from those around me.  The fear of the unknown has always been the biggest terror for me.  God helped me to begin to conquer this in the birth of my first child.  Pregnancy and childbirth is such a faith building event in your life.  For me, it was the first time that I was keenly aware of my absolute vulnerability.  So much was out of my control, such an opportunity to learn to trust God.

But instead, I registered at Babies R Us, bought every baby accessory imaginable so that I would be prepared for any circumstance that might arise.  I read countless books, sought advice from veteran moms, and spent hours trying to make the perfect decision on each minute detail of each day.  With every way that I tried to educate myself, improve myself, train myself,  I was sure that this would result in the things in my world becoming more within my control.  I overestimated the ability of my influence and underestimated the power of my God!

I was praying to God, telling Him what I had learned and discovered, asking for His help.  But I had never learned to listen to God.  I thought I was listening to Him in his word, the Bible, but really, it was another self help manual where I was seeking the answers to pre-conceived ideas I thought should be there.  I needed a paradigm shift badly, but didn't even know it.

It's funny how many times in scripture we see that God takes people out of their established routines, comfort zones and sometimes the places where they live to learn to follow Him.  Abraham had to leave his country, his people and his father's household to go to the future that God had planned for him.  Was there anything wrong with his country, his people, or his father's household?  Probably not.  But maybe Abraham could not open the eyes of his heart doing what he had always done.  Maybe he would not have been able to trust and depend on God if he was not in a completely strange land, as a sojourner and wanderer.   Could he have learned those same lessons right where he was?  It's very possible, but it probably would have taken a much longer amount of time.

God allowed Joseph to suffer a terrible betrayal and took him away to Egypt to endure a fearful imprisonment to develop him into the leader that would save the line of Abraham.  God sent Moses to Midian to build him into a different man. God took the children of Israel out of Egypt to lead them to their deliverance.  Jonah was sent to an enemy nation to have his perspective redefined.  God brought Esther into the life of a royal queen to bless His people.  Job had everything he loved taken from him to learn an important lesson from God.  Jesus called his disciples and they left all to learn of his ways.   Is this the only way to learn to trust God?  Not at all, but I think it does exponentially speed up the process.

As I head into this new year, I think about the areas in my life that I still do not give over to God.  I know that it is a process, and that faith sometimes builds quickly when we deal with monumental issues, and other times it builds slowly and quietly as we continue to seek God in our day to day lives. And so I go back to the verse above that I am contemplating today - As I seek to have a more perfect love for God, my fears are driven out one by one. The torment that plagues me in worry and anxiety is replaced by peace and confidence in my Lord.  He gives me a change in perspective, even though everything around me is still the same. This is what I seek for, to see through different eyes, the eyes of our Lord Jesus, and to love those around me as he loves those around him.

So now, when I see the homeless man sleeping outside on the ground, never approaching, never asking, always looking, I will now have the confidence to cast out my fear, share a morsel from my table and the spiritual food from my God.

Deuteronomy 15:11 tells me, "There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land." And like David, the most amazing King of Israel, I, too, now realize, "Yet I am poor and needy; come quickly to me, O God. You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay." Psalm 70: 5

Our world - it's a complicated mess.....

Tonight I thought I would sit down and read abcnews.com to see what was going on in the world.  I clicked over on the entertainment section and was blown away by what was featured in the news.  I was first greeted by a photo shoot that included two topless women in their jeans legs intertwined and arms strategically placed to cover themselves.  Then there was the article titled "It's complicated", discussing celebrities and how the new trend is to allow open marriages. Angelina Jolie was discussing how she and Brad Pitt have an open marriage, and would never restrict each other from any freedoms they might want while apart.  I quote "I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship," she said. "It's worse to leave your partner and talk badly about him afterwards."  As I left that page, I was greeted by Lady Ga-ga's see through clothing selection and passed by the video on how Mariah Carey was drunk while accepting an award.  Call me naive, but what is the world coming to?  Are these things all just every day occurrences and do we all think this is just normal behavior?  We are going against everything that we were designed to be and it is so painful to watch the decline of our race.  I wonder how our creator must feel being that He gave His only son for us and we respond by feeding our natural desires to the point of perversion?

Romans 2:20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

It grieves me to raise my children in this world that is seeking for their allegiance to the gods of materialism, sensuality and addiction.  I pray daily that God will guide me in the way to raise them, that He will show me the ways to equip them and that He will hold them all in the palm of his hand as his angels work overtime to lead these children into His kingdom.  Even so, come Lord Jesus!

Cheers!

As we were leaving Gateway mall, they were loading up these snowmen from the mall holiday display.  It made me so happy to see them, especially since I LOVE collecting snowmen and have been hearing all about the snow back home.  It wasn't until I got home and was viewing the picture that I noticed the sign on the truck (or bakkie as they call it here).  It just makes me think that happiness really is a state of mind.  Are we choosing to hire out cheerfulness today as we recognize all that we have and learn to love what is?

Just a few thoughts to share on cheerfulness from the Bible:

  • Proverbs 12:25
An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.

  • Proverbs 15:13
A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.

  • Proverbs 15:30
A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.

  • Proverbs 17:22
A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

  • Romans 12:6-8
6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach;  it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

  • 2 Corinthians 9:7
Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

  • Cheers!!
